Nokia N77 Now Official: Mobile Widescreen TV, 3G

Letterwealth

nokian77one.jpg

We had a really cryptic tip about the Nokia N77 last week, but now we have confirmation and actual pictures. It will indeed support mobile TV of the DVB-H variety viewable on its 2.4-inch screen, in addition to the EDGE, GPRS and UMTS standards. It only supports microSD cards up to 2GB in size, meaning that SanDisk's new 4GB beast can't be used here. Nokia also threw in Push-to-Talk and FM radio support. It'll hit Europe 2Q of this year for around $480.

holiday-mails.com

SanDisk announced today the world's highest capacity microSD HC card, coming in at an impressive 4GB. (It was only six months ago that it released a 2GB microSD card.) Good thing, too, what with all those storage-hungry cellphones that are coming out of 3GSM this week. Not only does it have plenty of space, but it should be plenty fast too, since it complies with the new SD Speed Class 2 spec. Good thing, since current microSD card, I've noticed, can be a little on the slow side. Keep your eyes open for all 4GB sometime later this year.

nokian7x.jpg

Big bad Reuters let it slip that Nokia will unveil at the 3GSM conference in Barcelona next week the N77, a consumer-aimed, moderately priced cellphone with TV capabilities. The N77, which should resemble other N7x phones like the N70 here, will be able to receive TV broadcast by way of DVB-H, a nascent mobile TV technology that is currently undergoing tests in several markets around the world. So what?

Nokia wants to jump start the mobile TV market, which up until now has really only taken off in Korea, if that. And no, we're not talking about downloading hot videoz picked out by your cellphone carrier, but actual programming. One problem seems to be that people just aren't that excited to watch video on their mobile devices if the screen isn't large enough. We should find out more once the Barça conference hits, hopefully with pretty pics of the phone, too.

In addition to an impressive array of business phones, Nokia has also launched a proper mobile TV phone, the N77, as well as a satnav phone, the 6110 Navigator.

Nokia calls the N77 a multimedia computer, but it's mainly geared toward watching mobile TV in the hopes that it will accelerate DVB-H mobile TV adoption.

Not available in the UK until 2008, it is launching in Ireland in the next month.

It's biggest feature is its 2.4-inch widescreen, which rivals the real estate of digital camera's displays, and integral to its user interface is a dedicated TV key that acts like the power switch on your television.

LG Shine Gets All Moody & Sexy

Letterwealth

LGC.jpg

LG are set to add to their ever-popular Black Label Series by releasing the LG Shine in a new, sulky Titanium Black finish. To save any confusion at the checkout they're releasing this model as the 'LG Shine Titanium Black.'

The feature set remains unchanged from the original and it is planned for release at the end of July 2007. Initially it will be made available within the UK, France, Netherlands and Austria (no stateside plans yet).

The Shine used to prance about like Paris Hilton, driving too fast and pissed with the ramifications. The new makeover, however, wouldn't batter an eyelash at a stretch inside; instead it would take down the system and look suave doing it.

Zářivé LG Shine i v pořádně rychlé verzi

LG připravuje 3G verzi svého nového vysouvacího modelu Shine. Novinka nabízí stejný design i parametry jako běžné provedení.

Nový 3G Shine bude mít označení KU970 a v sítích třetí generace nabídne rychlá data HSDPA až rychlostí 3,6 Mbps. Oproti standardnímu provedení KE970 (první dojmy zde) nabízí navíc druhý VGA fotoaparát pro videohovory a má větší paměť 512 MB. Tu lze stejně jako u běžného provedení rozšířit pomocí paměťových karet microSD.

Letterwealth

3G Shine má stejný design i rozměry (99,8 x 50,6 x 13,8 milimetru) jako běžné provedení. Zachován zůstal i kovový kryt.

Incase Protective iPhone Cover Tested (Verdict: OK)

Letterwealth

incasestock.png

This Incase Protective cover is the first piece of iPhone retail-bait I couldn't resist in the Apple store. The good: It's the sleekest of all cases in stock there, so it won't make your iPhone look like a Tonka truck; it's rubberized, available in black, red, and grey; and has a neat topographical pattern all over it that supposedly helps grip; cutouts or ridges for all buttons; helps the iPhone fit snuggly in iPod docks.

The bad:

It's isn't actually so skinny that it allows handset to dock with the Apple iPhone dock, despite it being the sleekest around (see photo), requiring me to remove the case or just use the dock cable alone. You should be acutely reminded that this won't help protect your screen, but this isn't so much a fault as a part of the design. (Maybe it'll work well with the Invisible Shield coating. The company says it won't impact the touchscreen's sensitivity, but we've yet to test that out.) As I remove the case for docking reasons, it is starting to stretch out, like a wizard's sleeve. That could be a problem as debris falls in between the sleeve and the iPhone. (I think this would result in abrasions, not pearls.) This should cost $15, not $30, and Incase, you know it.

Verdict: I'm satisfied with it.
